Kerala is home to a vibrant culture and boasts distinctive sarees characterized by off-white, white, or ivory-white fabric adorned with a resplendent golden or silver border. The culture, heritage, and tradition of the place are reflected in Kerala sarees. The sarees in the region are ‘bound in tradition’ and are called Mundum Neriyatham, Kerala Mundu, or Kasavu. It is also said that the sarees have motifs, embroidery, prints, or zari in a light color that symbolizes purity, simplicity, and peace and the life of Shakuntala and the stories of folk tales and mythology related to the local culture.

The sarees in Kerala are easily identified because of their rich gold border and are distinct from other traditional sarees of India. Kerala sarees are worn by Malayalam women not just for Onam or the Malayalee New Year, but throughout the year for religious occasions and weddings. KALKI can help you opt for the best Kerala sarees from its wonderful collection and with the guide that helps you drape.

Here is How You Can Achieve The Kerala Drape To Perfection

Use a traditional white and gold Kerala saree for the perfect Kerala style draping. Keep your accessories, safety pins, jewellery, matching petticoat, blouse, and hair ornaments ready before you begin your drape. Footwear by your side is a great help to achieve perfection.

Step 1 – Tucking The Saree

Tuck the end of the saree (the non-pallu end) on the right side and bring it around your waist towards the backside. Tuck it in fully while doing the same. Make sure your saree is level to the ground.

 Step 2 – Fold & Tuck

Reach out to the second end of the saree and start making the pleats from this end. Secure the pleats with some safety pins. Make a round and place the pleats on your left shoulder and pin it.  Now start setting the pleats from the front side.

Step 3 – Drape It Around

Next,  take the inner border of the pallu and set it on the waist to give a shape. Tighten the border and secure it with a safety pin on the saree. After securing the border make a small pleats and tuck it on the shapewear. Now make pleats in the front and tuck it in the center.

Step 4 – The Final Touch

Now with the remaining fabric of the shorter pallu, make 3-4 pleats and tuck it in the chest area. You are ready to show off the Kerala-style draping.

Use pins to secure the pleats at whatever place you feel the need. The saree with a thick golden border will be the perfect choice to flaunt the traditional Kerala saree look.
