Real chikankari is a craft where technicians create hand embroidered intricate patterns on fabric. Real chikankari is often made using white thread on fabrics like pure cotton, silk and georgette.

These two are the same art forms, but when Lucknowi is used as a prefix for (chikankari fabric), it shows the dominance of that region. It showcases the craft of the particular region, Lucknow. Chikankari is derived from the Persian word ‘chikeen’ which means intricately embroidered fabric.

A total of 32 types of chikankari stitches are there. The most famous ones are are Jaali, Phanda, Bakhia, Murri, and Tepchi.

Cotton thread is mostly used for chikankari embroidery. Even for a georgette chikankari saree, a cotton thread is preferred, however, to add to the glamour quotient, golden zari and silver zari threads are used.
